 | | Veteran Paul Kelsch is honored at the Veterans Day Celebration at AIS. | On Wednesday, November 11th, Augusta Independent Schools, the Augusta Independent/Bracken County Community Education Program and other school affiliates honored area veterans during a morning ceremony.
The events began with Jim Thornsbury presenting the United States flag on behalf of the Mains-Quinlin Post of the Augusta VFW. He was then followed by the Augusta Independent Preschool and Kindergarten classes leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The school band played the National Anthem, and class representatives from grades 3-6 read poems or informative sheets on behalf of the veterans.
Phyllis Reed, Community Education Director presented two plaques to World War II veterans Thomas H. Cline, and Paul Kelsch. Both are alumnus of the school Tom graduating in 1938, and Paul in 1939. Upon graduation, both chose to leave Augusta and serve in the military. Tom chose to serve in the Air Force, while Paul served in the U.S. Army.

Paul and his brother George operated Kelsch Bros. Grocery on East Second Street for many years while Tom returned to Augusta High School in the 70's as a teacher.
Class representatives from the middle and high school history classes ready the History of the VFW, and the story of 'Taps'. Will Smithers sang 'My Old Kentucky Home', and Principal Lisa McCane gave closing remarks.
Other Veterans honored at the program were: Dick Behymer, Dawn Calandra, Johnny Hargett, Stanley Hargett, Phil Hedges, Bill Lilley, David Purcell, Bobby Staggs, Tim Sweeney, Jim Thornsbury, Steve Welte, and Clarence 'Bud' White.
After the program the veterans and their guests were invited to cake and punch served by Family and Consumer Science students in the FCS classroom.
