On Wednesday, March 3, as part of Read Across America Week, Loni R. Burchett author of a series of books about two black labs named Bear and Katie came to Augusta School to speak with students in Pre-school through sixth grade.

Ms. Burchett spoke of her childhood passion for writing stories. She told of how she waited until her own children were grown before she thought about writing her stories in book form.

Ms. Burchett told the children what it took to not only write, but to also illustrate and publish the books.

Ms. Burchett talked of how mischievous her dogs, Bear and Katie were and how they played a role in her everyday life. Bear and Katie were not just her pets, they were the inspiration for the books.

Through Ms. Burchett's eyes, Bear and Katie have been on many grand adventures with one even bringing them to Augusta via riverboat. She brought with her several Bear and Katie books for the students to view. The books were autographed and available for purchase. The school purchased multiple copies of the book which will be placed in classrooms as well as the school library.

Ms. Burchett told the students that she is currently writing two more books. One will be released over the summer and the other later this fall.
